Being able to switch turnouts over DCC is a necessity for layout control. But in an outdoor layout, there are the elements of nature to fight with. This is the first of many switch houses/enclosures that will need to be built, and to blend into the layout they will all need to be custom made for the location.
This will be the second of many more too come. Hopefully by spring, we will be ready to operate most if not all our switches/turnouts by remote.
Well, we have built and installed the 3rd switch shack, or switch dome maybe in this case.... and we are BEHIND SCHEDULE! But, this seems to be a good general purpose and quick to build switch machine that will hold up outdoors year round. Only time will tell. We should have three more of these built by the weekend. (All our switch shacks have a manual throw button on them. Some are lit, this one is center/top un-lit.)
We now have 4 switch control units of this design. Their first winter will tell us if they have a chance at a good long life outdoors.
